I'm 30 and feel like I still have no career direction. What should I do?
I'll begin with my education and then tell you a little about myself. I have a Bachelors of Science in biology and a Masters of Education in science ed. I'm currently working towards a Phd in Biology, but I just don't think it is what I want to do. It takes so much time and I would rather spend most of my time with my family. I have been aimless in my career search for years. I started off in college as a computer engineering major, which I hated. I switched to biology, which I love. However, you can't do anything in biology without a Phd. Well, I really don't want to Pile it Higher and Deeper. I won't be done with my phd until I am 35. My dad recently experienced heart failure at 58. If I follow his path, then that means I would only have 23 years of work before I die. What would my family do then? I tried high school education for a while, but found it annoying. The school system is so screwed up, I just don't see how any other teachers can handle it. I taught at the college level during my masters and am teaching during my phd. I love teaching the college level, but the probability of getting a job like that is around 1% after graduating. Therefore, relying on that is not a good idea. I have heard hundreds of people say, "start your own business." Like what? I don't know what sort of services I could provide. Plus, I don't have the money to start a business. I'm afraid that the path I am on will mean that my family won't be provided for in the future when I kick the bucket. I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced the same thing and if you have some advice. And please no rudeness like saying I'm lazy. I have worked my butt off in almost every job I've had. Plus, the degrees have been no picnic. So, thoughts anyone?
I have tried to apply for federal jobs. I get calls but can never get a job because I don't have veteran's preference or enough points for the positions.

High school doesn't prepare you at all for the real world? do you agree?
It seems like a set up that was created so that colleges AND university are mandatory if you want a professional career. I mean in high school, what sort of knowledge do you possess that can get you above minimum wage unless you attend university to obtain knowledge of how to start your own business, etc etc. If high school's last year included courses for those who didn't want to take that path, they would be able to live somewhat of a comfortable life.
I'm just tired of paying 600-1200 a year just for textbooks just to know how to become an accountant >_>

Does it matter which college I go to if I want to be a business owner?
If you go to a college that is hard to get into and more well known does it look better when applying for a job? And if your going to start your own business your hiring yourself so why would it matter?
